Can we avoid constipation during Ramadan?

posted by: Carole Makhoul Hani

How can we fight constipation during the Holy month of Ramadan?

Constipation during the fasting period is mostly due to the changes in our nutrition and lifestyle.
The main reason behind constipation is the reduction of fibers and fluids, especially water, in our diet. Therefore, it is recommended that people who suffer from constipation follow these guidelines:
1. Drink a minimum of 1.5 L of water daily.
2. Drink fluids such as soups in large quantities.
3. Eat high fiber foods such as vegetables, grains, oats, whole wheat, bran, brown rice…
4. Avoid eating white bread, white rice, pastries...
5. Eat vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, spinach, rucola, artichoke and others ...
6. Eat dried fruits especially prunes, apricots and dates while drinking non-caffeinated herbal teas first thing in the morning.
7. Walk daily between “Iftar” and “suhoor” meals.
